Universal on Windows Vista

Universal has been written using Microsoft’s very latest technology (.NET Framework 2.0 released Nov 2005). This platform is the basis of Windows Vista, Microsoft’s next generation of operating systems, ensuring our products are future proofed for years to come. There are some points however to note below when using Universal on Vista as it has some new settings which can effect Universal.

  • Major Issue with Windows Vista

There is a major issue when using Windows Vista on the Server computer, therefore we recommend you use Windows XP or 2003 on you server computer. Using Windows Vista on a client computer is supported.

If Universal is open on one computer (client or server) then no other clients can access Universal. The screen freezes until the other computer has closed Universal.

This is Microsoft issue and there is a hot fix available from the following website.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935366/en-us. Contact Thesaurus Technology if you have any queries.

  • Sync offline files

  • Windows Vista has a new feature called Sync Centre. Sync Centre gives you one place where you can manage data synchronisation in several scenarios:: between multiple PCs, between network servers and PCs, and with the devices you connect to your PC.

This can cause a conflict with Universal, as it copies down Universal's files to use offline, and when you to try to connect again it will not allow you to do so successfully.

This is an option which needs to be disabled as you may find some conflict with Universal.
    To do this:

    1. Click start in Vista

    2. Select Control Panel

    3. Offline files

    4. Select disable offline files (if not already done)

    5. Click apply

    Sync Centre
  • Desktop Icon

If you access Universal as a shortcut from the desktop then you need to manually create one. This is no longer done as per previous versions: to create a Desktop icon follow the steps below:

1. Click start in Vista

2.Select all programs

3.Select Thesaurus Technology

4.Right click on the Universal icon, select send to Desktop as icon

5. This will create your a shortcut icon to the software.

  • Universal Folder Directory

On the server machine the location of the Universal folder may have to be changed. The Universal folder can no longer be in C:\Program Files\Universal, it needs to be moved to another location. This can be anywhere on the machine apart from the Program Files directory. We recommend you have the Universal folder on the server machine in the following location:

C:\universal
